Liu Yu (Andi)
Ruled (AD 107-125)

Han Ruler and Emperor Biographies
Authoring and Translation by

After Shang Di’s unfortunate short life, his cousin Liu Yu was placed on the throne by the Empress-dowager Deng at the age of twelve. Another weak Han Emperor, An Di left politics to his wife’s family, the Yan.

His reign was beset by continuous natural disasters and military problems, particularly in Central Asia. A successful campaign against the northern Qiang tribes in AD 107 gave some relief, but the cost was ruinous, leading to demands for a general withdrawal from Central Asia.

The childless Empress Yan had An Di’s son by a concubine, Li, demoted from Heir Apparent. After An Di’s death in AD 125 her choice, Shao Di (a grandson of Zhang Di), slipped through the role of Emperor so swiftly that his day of birth is unknown. And he remains unrecognised in the official Chinese list of emperors.
