It's based in the Three Kingdoms era, much like KOEI's titles of similar name. In putting together this FAQ, I referenced the works of other FAQs hosted at GameFAQs.com, especially KR Zhang' and Xian Zhu Xuande's extensive general FAQs. Their work is very good, and for the purposes here, it was primarily their lists of officer statistics that were checked as going back and double-checking the officer statistics in-game would be a tremendous time- consuming endeavor. So I would like to thank the various other authors that have, over the years, contributed their time and knowledge to the game community. So, just what is this guide? It's a simple list of all the officers in the game, along with when, or even if, they may be recruited and how they can be recruited. And boy, are there a lot of officers in this game... The largest section is the Master List, where every officer is listed along with their statistics and a short blurb about how to recruit them into your army. The officers are sorted into groups based on when in the game you'll encounter them, and then in alphabetical order underneath that. I hope this guide is helpful to you. Chen Deng (94/157/153) Found in the southwest building in Qing Zhou. Talk to the old man next to him to recruit Chen Deng. Cheng Yuan Zhi (85/68/194) After the defeat of Zhang Jao at Qing Zhou castle, and also losing Liu Bei because of the plot, Cheng Yuan Zhi may be recruited after encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Guan Yu (245/180/Tiger) Guan Yu joins the party automatically at the beginning of the game. Han Zhong (80/30/204) Han Zhong may be recruited after the battle with Zhang Jao at Tie Man Xia by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Liu Bei (180/225/314) Liu Bei joins the party automatically at the beginning of the game. Ma Yuan Yi (76/34/177) Ma Yuan Yi cannot be recruited. Mi Zhe (73/157/161) Talk to him in a building in the west of Xu Zhou city to recruit Mi Zhe. Song Ren (80/100/110) Talk to Song Ren in the starting village to recruit him. Song Yong (60/40/104) Talk to Song Yong in the starting village to recruit him. Zhang Bao (68/144/299) Zhang Bao cannot be recruited. Zhang Fei (250/75/Tiger) Zhang Fei joins the party automatically at the beginning of the game. Zhang Jao (93/136/346) Zhang Jao cannot be recruited. Zheng Mao (102/34/259) After defeating Zhang Jao at Qing Zhou you can recruit Zheng Mao by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. -------------------- Tyranny of Dong Zhuo -------------------- This section of the game begins after the second battle against Zhang Jao. Cai Yong (117/180/380) After fighting Lu Bu at Yan Zhou, Cai Yong may be recruited after encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Dong Min (72/36/380) Dong Min cannot be recruited. Dong Zhuo (162/72/439) Dong Zhuo cannot be recruited. Guan Ping (200/137/418) After finding the Gold Key in the cave near Fan Shui Guan, Guan Ping will appear near the cave entrance. Recruit him by talking to him. Hu Zhen (90/45/299) After fighting Lu Bu at Yan Zhou, Hu Zhen may be recruited after encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Hua Xiong (162/36/439) After the battle at Fan Shui Guan fortress, Hua Xiong may be recruited after encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Huo Hu (80/175/236) Talk to him in the south east corner of Hua Lao Guan to recruit Huo Hu. Jia Xu (18/220/418) Jia Xu cannot be recruited. Li Jue (120/72/399) After defeating Li Jue at Luo Yang, he may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Li Ru (18/200/362) After the battle at Hu Lao Guan, Li Ru may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Li Su (99/45/299) After the battle at Fan Shui Guan, Li Su may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Liu Feng (187/162/399) To hire Liu Feng, talk to him after Liu Bei leaves the party. He appears in the palace on the party's way out after Liu Bei leaves the party. Lu Bu (255/72/439) Lu Bu may be recruited by giving him the Gem Sword, which can be found in Lou Yang using the Gold Key item, during the battle against him at Yang Zhou. Wang Gui (110/40/346) Talk to Wang Gui in the south east of Luo Yang to recruit him. Xu Rong (90/117/314) After defeating him at Lou Yang, Xu Rong may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Yang Jin (125/40/247) Talk to Yang Jin in the north part of Fan Shui Guan to recruit him. Zhang Ji (147/36/362) After the battle against Dong Zhuo at Lou Yang, Zhang Ji may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. ------------------- Yuan Shu's Ambition ------------------- This section of the game begins after the battle against Dong Zhuo. Guo Tu (180/90/1317) After fighting at Ji Zhou, Guo Tu may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Ju Shou (40/180/1449) After fighting at Ji Zhou, Ju Shou may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Lu Bu (255/40/1449) Lu Bu cannot be recruited again after he leaves your party. Lu Guang (160/50/1037) After fighting at Bo Hai, Lu Guang may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Wen Hun (190/40/1449) After defeating Xu Shou, Wen Hun may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Xu Shou (40/170/1255) After defeating him at his fortress, Xu Shou may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Xu Zhe (73/220/643) Xu Zhe is behind some rocks in a cave far west of Bo Hai. Get the Gun Powder item from a character in Bo Hai and Use it to destroy the rocks and reach Xu Zhe. Talk to him to recruit him. He uses the alias Dan Fu when you meet him. Yan Liang (180/40/1381) After defeating Xu Shou, Yan Liang may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Yuan Shang (170/140/1672) Yuan Shang cannot be recruited. Yuan Shao (170/150/1754) Yuan Shao cannot be recruited. Yuan Shu (142/152/899) Yuan Shu will only appear in this section of the game if you did not execute him after defeating him in the previous section. Yuan Shu cannot be recruited. Yuan Tan (170/150/1754) Yuan Tan cannot be recruited. Yuan Xi (140/120/1519) Yuan Xi cannot be recruited. Zhang He (210/150/1317) Zhang He cannot be recruited. Zhang Yi (100/90/989) After fighting at Ji Zhou, Zhang Yi can be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Zhao Yun (245/216/Tiger) To recruit Zhao Yun at Guang Zong, you must first rescue his sister from Xu Shou, which requires the Silver Key sold in Nan Yang. After rescuing his sister, take the Zhou Letter to him and he will join the party. Zhou Cang (215/85/506) Zhou Cang can be found in a cave west of Bo Hai. Talk to him to recruit him. -------------------- Four Kings and Chaos -------------------- This section typically follows the final battle with Yuan Shao, though a player may skip ahead and do this part of the game before returning to fight Yuan Shao. Bao Long (126/63/1255) After defeating Zhao Fan at Gui Yang, Bao Long may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Chen Ying (136/42/1197) After defeating Zhao Fan at Gui Yang, Chen Ying may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Gong Zhi (94/157/1197) After defeating Jin Xuan at Wu Ling, Gong Zhi may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Han Xuan (136/126/1519) Han Xuan cannot be recuited. Huang Zhong (235/147/Tiger) After defeating Han Xuan at Chang Sha, Huang Zhong may be recruited by talking to him just inside the Chang Sha gates. Jin Xuan (147/42/1317) Jin Xuan cannot be recruited. Liu Du (126/157/1672) Liu Du cannot be recruited. Liu Yang (126/126/1381) Liu Yang cannot be recruited. Ma Liang (59/211/1449) After finishing this section of the game, you can return to Ma Liang's home and recruit him and Ma Su by talking to them. Ma Su (138/195/1754) After finishing this section of the game, you can return to Ma Liang's home and recruit him and Ma Su by talking to them. Pang Tong (99/240/3765) After finishing this section of the game, you can recruit Pang Tong by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Wei Yan (228/136/1317) After defeating Han Xuan at Chang Sha, Wei Yan may be recruited by talking to Huang Zhong just inside the Chang Sha gates. Xing Dao Rong (168/31/1519) Xing Dao Rong cannot be recruited. Yang Ling (168/42/1197) After fighting at Chang Sha, Yang Ling may be recruited by encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Zhao Fan (136/105/1594) Zhao Fan cannot be recruited. Zhu Ge Liang (122/255/Tiger) This is a long and involved plot quest. Huang Quan (65/165/2695) After fighting at Luo, Huang Quan can be recruited after encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Lei Tong (184/88/3110) After fighting at Cheng Du, Lei Tong can be recruited after encountering and defeating him in a random battle. Leng Bao (180/70/2024) After fighting at Luo, Leng Bao can be recruited after encountering and defeating him in a random battle. One is a Yellow Turban/Scarves leader, the other is Zhang Fei's son. 2) You fight Lu Bu in three different parts of the game, but he's only recruitable during the Tyranny portion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part 6 - Notes on Recruitment When you encounter a general that can be recruited during a random battle, and you defeat said general, at the end of the fight you'll get an opportunity to recruit that general to your army. The general will either reject you out of hand, ask for a bribe, or join you for free. The bribe can take two forms, straight up cash, or a 'fine horse'. The fine horse means the Steed item that can be purchased from some shops in the game. Give the general what he wants for a bribe and he'll join you until the end of the game. Also note that there's an upper limit to the number of generals that you're allowed to have at once. I unfortunately didn't count when I hit the limit, but it's in the neighborhood of 60 generals held in the 'reserve.'
