Ancient Brotherhood: The Story of Yang and Zuo
Translation of the story of Yangjue Ai and Zuo Botao
Biography
Yangjue Ai is an historic figure from the Warring States period of Chinese history (481/403 BC–221 BC) and, along with his friend Zuo Botao, is referenced in the novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Two friends, Zuo Botao and Yangjue Ai, were bond for Chu in search of office when a snowstorm overtook them. There was not enough food and clothing to keep both alive, so Zuo Botao sacrificed himself, giving his share to Yangjue Ai. Later, Yangjue Ai became an official. He searched for and found Zuo Boat’s remains, interred them, and then killed himself to demonstrate his loyalty to his friend’s memory. (1)
