Biography
Zhuge Zhi served Wu. In AD 230 Sun Quan dispatched his generals Wei Wen (衛溫) and Zhuge Zhi (諸葛直) with a navy of 10,000 into the East China Sea to seek the legendary islands of Yizhou (夷洲; may be modern Taiwan) and Danzhou (亶洲; may be modern Japan) to locate and conquer them, a decision which was strenuously opposed by Lu Xun and Quan Cong. Although the navy could not locate Danzhou, they were able to find Yizhou, and returned in AD 231 having captured several thousand men—but not before losing 80–90% of their navy to illness.
Sun Quan, who was beginning to show signs of deteriorating judgement as he aged, did not find fault in himself for ordering the venture and ordered the execution of both Wei Wen and Zhuge Zhi. (1)
