Biography
After Yuan Shao died Yuan Shang and Yuan Tan turned against each other. Yuan Tan wished to attack his brother in Jizhou, but Cao Cao threatened his position. Guo Tu convinced Yuan Tan to set aside his grudge with his brother long enough to face Cao Cao. Yuan Tan broke up his camp to march on Liyang where he lost no time in offering battle. He chose for his champion Wang Zhao and, when Wang Zhao rode out, Cao Cao sent Xu Huang to meet him. They fought only a few bouts before Wang Zhao was slain. At once Cao Cao’s army pressed forward, and Yuan Tan suffered a severe defeat. Yuan Tan drew off his army and retired into Liyang, whence he sent to his brother for reinforcements.
