Differences Between Fact and Common Fiction
- Song Yong and his brother, Song Ren, are both fictional characters created by Capcom for the Nintendo game, Destiny of an Emperor.
Biography
When Liu Bei has barely sworn the oath of brotherhood with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei in the peach orchard and has just received supplies from the merchant Shui Zhouping to begin his campaign against the Yellow Scarves, he meets with Song Yong and his brother, Song Ren, in Luosong Village. They offer to join his cause and serve as additional generals to help Liu Bei as he finds his feet. (1)
1: For many Song Yong and Song Ren served as one of their first introductions to the world of Three Kingdoms as they played through Capcom’s classic Nintendo game, Destiny of an Emperor.
Song Yong is an officer of less-than-average strength and intelligence and his brother, Song Ren, is a mediocre strategist who somehow manages to best Song Yong in both categories. Their soldiers are few and their talent limited, but new players to the game will appreciate the assistance they provide, even if their stay in Liu Bei’s army is destined to be limited. It is unknown where Capcom came up with the idea for these two characters and there is no mention of them in the novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, or in other historic texts. In fact, Capcom even dropped them from the sequel, Destiny of an Emperor 2. Perhaps their sole role is to represent the villagers who joined Liu Bei when he first took up his cause.
