Biography
Liu Biao was born in AD 142. He was tall, smart, and handsome. In AD 190, Dong Zhuo appointed Liu Biao to be Inspector of Jing province. Thanks to the advice of Kuai Yue and Kuai Liang, Liu Biao established his authority in Jing. The following year, Sun Jian attacked Liu Biao, but was struck by an arrow and died. For several years afterward, Liu Biao consolidated his power within the region.
Liu Biao turned Jing province into a haven for scholars and philosophers. He allowed Song Zhong to establish an academy for teaching the classics. From all over the land, a multitude of men of learning came to study in Liu Biao’s territory. Militarily, Liu Biao and his ally Zhang Xiu (mostly the latter) occasionally clashed with Cao Cao. When Cao Cao and Yuan Shao were at war, Liu Biao made no major move to help either side. After Cao Cao decisively trounced the Yuan family in the Northeast and other opponents, he loosed his forces on Jing. Meanwhile, Liu Biao’s vassal Huang Zu suffered defeat at the hands of the Sun family of the Southeast. At this critical and inopportune time, Liu Biao died of natural causes. His successor surrendered to Cao Cao.
