Dong Zhuo’s Sanguozhi Biography
A rough-draft work-in-progress by Lu Kang.
Biography
Dong Zhuo, styled Zhongying, was from Lintao county, Longxi commandery. He was the second son of Dong Junya.
In 189, Dong Zhuo seized control of the imperial court using his army. He deposed Liu Hong, who was Excellency of Works, to take his title for himself. He became discontented with Emperor Shao and soon deposed him in favor of Emperor Xian, who became his puppet. He later became Grand Commandant after moving Liu Yu, who held that title, to Grand Major.
In the first lunar month of 190, several men in administrative posts across the realm formed a coalition under Yuan Shao and waged war on Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo soon moved the capital from Luoyang to Chang’an, sacking and burning Luoyang. He tried to send a peace delegation to the coalition, but all but one were killed.
