Biography
Cuan Gu was the governor and regional inspector of Jianning. His family came from a prominent clan of the region (see Cuan Xi’s entry for details). When Sima Yan usurped the throne from Wei, he asked Cuan Gu for military assistance against Jiaozhi (nominally Wu territory, although Wu’s control over the region was occasionally slippery). Cuan Gu apparently carried out some incursions into this region.
By aligning themselves with Jin, the Cuan family was able to gradually increase its power in Nanzhong, becoming the most powerful clan in the region. (Herman 265–266)
