Biography
After Dong Zhuo’s death, Li Jue and Guo Si took over the capital at Chang’an. Their henchmen infiltrated the palace staff and they kept the Emperor under close watch. Officials were promoted or demoted as they saw fit. In response to this, Ma Teng and Han Sui marched on the capital with an army of one hundred thousand soldiers. Privy Counselor Ma Yu, Court Counselor Chong Shao, and Left Imperial Corpos Commander Liu Fan secretly persuaded the Emperor to promote both Ma Teng and Han Sui to the rank of general—the former Conqueror of the West, and the later Queller of the West—and also got authorization for their expedition.
Unfortunately, Jia Xu prepared a strategy of defense which prevented Ma Teng and Han Sui from defeating their army, forcing them to retreat back to their territories (battle took place in AD 194). A household servant exposed the plot to the commanders, and in retaliation for their involvement, Ma Yu, Chong Shao, and Liu Fan, were executed, and their heads placed on display at the gate. Their clans, old and young, male and female, were also executed.
