Lady Wang (of Langya)

Sanguozhi Officer Biography

translated by

Lady Wang, wife of Quan, the Lord of Wu, was a native of Langya (1). The Lady was selected to enter the palace, and having found favor [with Quan] during the Huangwu years, she gave birth to [Sun] He. Sun Quan’s love for her was only second to that for Lady Bu. When Lady Bu died, Sun He was made crown prince, and Quan was about to make Lady Wang queen. However, Princess Quan had detested Lady Wang, and often spread rumors about her.

(1) From Wu Shu: The Lady’s father was called Lujiu.

When Sun Quan became ill in bed, [Princess Quan] told that Lady Wang appeared glad. And so Lady Wang was reprimanded severely by Quan, and in her depression she died. As when He’s son, [Sun] Hao, became established, he bestowed on her the posthumous title of Empress of Great Benevolence, and all three of her younger brothers were enfeoffed as Marquis.

(I): Updates of this biography have been discontinued by the translator in favor of an alternate translation found in Robert Joe Cutter and William G. Crowell's Empresses and Consorts, a marvelous hardcover book detailing the role of women during the Three Kingdoms era. It includes the biographies of women included in Chen Shou's Sanguozhi. This translation remains online for archival purposes only.
