Biography
[Xiahou Yuan’s 5th son,] Xiahou Rong, was a clever and quick child. At the age of 7 he could compose essays, and everyday he would read no less than 1,000 word-long passages, learning them by heart as soon as he saw the text. When Cao Pi heard about him, he invited him to a banquet. There were more than 100 people there, and they each had cards with their names and their place of origin on them. Once a guest had shown Xiahou Rong his card, Xiahou Rong would know it, and did not get anyone’s name wrong during the whole time. The Emperor [Cao Pi] was astonished. When Xiahou Yuan was defeated at Hangzhong, Xiahou Rong [who was also at Hanzhong] was only 13 years of age. Those around him tried to carry him away from the battle, but he refused, saying, “The lord, my father, is in danger; how can I escape death alone?” Thus he drew his sword and fought, and died on the field.
