Officer Details

Wade-Giles: Hu Chüêrh
Simplified Chinese: 胡车儿
Pronunciation: Hu2 Che1er2 [Ju1]

Name Notes: Ju1 is the former pronunciation of 車, which is now pronounced Che1. We hold true to the standard set by Moss Roberts and others, using the old pronunciation for an old historical figure. Besides, it helps to alleviate confusion between him and Hu Che’er of Niu Fu.

Biography

Sanguo Yanyi

Hu Juer was a commander in service to Zhang Xiu, and was said to have been a man of great physical strength. The novel records him as having been able to lift up to five hundred jin, or even ride seven hundred li in a single day.

When Zhang Xiu first surrendered to Cao Cao, he would later become enraged at the relationship Cao Cao developed with his uncle’s widow, Lady Zou. Jia Xu formulated a plot to rid the city of Cao Cao, but Zhang Xiu was unsure of how to deal with Dian Wei, who guarded him. Hu Juer, who was one of four captains stationed in Cao Cao’s encampment as part of the plot, prepared a plan in which Dian Wei was made drunk, while he himself snuck in and stole the warrior’s weapons. Zhang Xiu’s troops would go on to attack Cao Cao, and thanks to Hu Juer’s efforts, Dian Wei would die in the battle. Cao Cao, however, would escape, though he mourned the loss of Dian Wei.
