Biography

Fictional Biography

Ma Yunlu is a fictional character from Fan Sanguo Yanyi (反三國演義), a retelling of Romance of the Three Kingdoms written by Zhou Dahuang (周大荒) in the early 1900s.

Ma Yunlu was daughter to Ma Teng and younger sister of Ma Chao. In Fan Sanguo Yanyi she is portrayed as an accomplished warrior with a forward personality. Her family feared she would marry an inferior man, and indeed she remained unmarried as late as 22. Ma Yunlu eventually met and married Zhao Yun with Liu Bei serving as witness, and Zhuge Liang and Fa Zheng as matchmakers. She continued her career as a general in Shu Han where she provides moral support to Zhao Yun.

Ma Yunlu makes a more familiar appearance in Koei’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms IX, where her background is as above and Huang Yueying (Zhuge Liang’s wife) is portrayed as her best friend, and they are fond of discussing military strategy together.
